What will you do?
Presbítero Maestro Cemetery is more than a cemetery. It is an open-air museum built in 1808, full of history, timeless beauty and an air of mystery that makes the visit memorable. From its strange galleries you can admire the coastal hills of Lima, an atmosphere that evokes the battles, continuous migrations and elegance of old Lima. You will walk through its long avenues and alleys, learn about the life of the most important characters of the history of Peru who are buried there, and appreciate the beautiful crypts and mausoleums made between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will finish the visit knowing the famous “Suicide barracks,” the subject of many urban legends.
You will also visit Lima’s “Chinatown,” a vibrant and colorful space that is home and trading center for many Chinese migrant families who settled in the city in the past decades. Here you can eat a delicious min-pao, a Chinese snack filled with meat that is a traditional local favorite.

How to get there
Corner of Jiron Ancash with Jiron Lampa in front of the church and catacombs of San Francisco de Lima.
Any transportation that takes you as close as possible to the main square of Lima. From that point walk two blocks to the meeting point.

Things to consider
If you wish to use a camera in the cemetery, the Lima Public Beneficence charges an extra 11 soles per person. You can use your cell phone to take pictures.
Bring cash, comfortable shoes, hat, sunscreen, water and if you want, a snack.
It is important to know that the bus from downtown Lima to the cemetery is not modern. It is public transport so it can be somewhat uncomfortable and sometimes full so we might have to stand. The trip is not long (20 to 25 minutes approximately). The trip is interesting because you meet the people of this city; tourists don’t normally use these buses. You will also get to know areas of Lima that, though somewhat neglected, have a lot of history.
The cemetery does not have toilets, benches or places to buy water. Once we depart you can find stores and services.
If you prefer to take a cab to return from the cemetery to the center of Lima, it is possible to do so on your own.
Due to the demands of the walk and the lack of some services in the cemetery, this tour is not recommended for children.
